Body Salty: The Benefits of Salt for Healthy Skin

Think of how you feel as you approach the sea – the salt clinging to your skin, the smell lovely in the air. The therapy of ocean air cradles you before you catch your first glimpse of the shore. We are always finding clever ways to recreate that sensational therapy and our oneness with the sea in our daily rituals whether through the foods we eat like tobiko fish eggs or nori seaweed or in the skincare we choose in all ranges of salt scrubs. I have even begun swimming in a salt water pool on a weekly basis for the exercise, but also for the benefits to my skin and my young daughter’s. By avoiding the harshness of chlorine pools we are able to maintain the pH levels necessary to healthy skin while soaking in the warm salt waters at our local wellness center. Aside from the incredible relaxation of swimming in a salt water pool, it does not dry out your skin the way chlorinated pools do and no more green hair! It’s also a pastime we can enjoy for better health all year round. When we are physically active we sweat out the salt of our bodies. We have to be mindful of how we replace that essential component of our being.

While ingesting salt can cause problems with blood pressure in the long run it serves as a splendid exfoliant and polish for the skin. When combined with organic tea tree to create a paste, fine Baleine sea salt actually heals dry scalp and decreased dreaded dandruff when applied directly to the affected areas of your scalp and thoroughly rinsed afterward. Dead Sea salt in particular has 80 minerals that are essential if your goal is healthy skin. The best way to ensure healthy skin is to maintain optimal hydration which is why sea salt is so important for your skin’s care. Not only does sea salt cleanse skin better than soap, stimulates blood circulation, and it also removes toxins and opens pores so that your skin can breathe with ease. Another added bonus: it firms and strengthens skin tissue for a visibly youthful look. The best part is you can try some salt scrub recipes at home and it’s the gift for healthy skin that everyone will appreciate.
