Food Is Medicine

In life, we are given too many choices; as a result, we make some bad ones. In particular, many of us make many wrong food choices when it comes to our diet: we eat what we are not supposed to eat, and do not eat what we are supposed to eat. In other words, we forget that food is medicine.

Food is medicine, because it gives the energy for growth and development. At birth, we all got our nutrients in the food consumed by our mothers during pregnancy. So, some of us were healthy babies, and some were not so lucky. After that, we are pretty much on our own, especially when we grow up. Our food choices produce the energy we need to grow and maintain our bodies throughout our lives. In that respect, food is medicine.

5 Tips to Avoid Food Related Illnesses

Not only are the foods you’re eating nutritionally unsound, but the number of food related illnesses and deaths are on the rise…The FDA states that food poisoning, Listeriosis, Hepatitis A, Hemorrhagic Colitis and a number of other food borne illnesses are killing 13 men, women and children per day.

It’s appalling that this is happening in our country every single day in this day and age.

Young children, the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system suffer the greatest risk; however most of the above mentioned illnesses are of great risk to all of us. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that roughly 76 million people in the United States suffer food borne illnesses each year, 300,000 are hospitalized and 5,000 die. According to the CDC children younger than the age of 4 are sickened by food more than those in any other age group, but adults over age 50 suffer more hospitalizations and death as a result of food-related infections. The Battle Between Junk Food And Health Food

So what is junk food anyway?

According to the definition, any food item that has low nutritive value as per the Food Standards Academy and deemed unhealthy by the non-eaters is termed as Junk Food. The term was coined by the Center for Science director, Michael Jacobson, in 1972. Since then, the term has been commonly used.

Basically, the most common components of “junk food” are fats, sugars and all things that make you fat and do not contain proteins or vitamins or fibers for that matter, so here label reading is definitely a must. I get a real kick when the promoters in the supermarkets go ‘disappeared’ whenever they see me reading the labels.
